Christmas Baking

Spreading The Cheer!

Just a simple note to wish all a very happy holiday season from all of us at All Seniors Care.

Here's a few photos featuring some of our lovely ladies at La Gappe doing some Christmas baking. The cookies were so tasty, they disappeared almost as quickly as they were made!

Merry Christmas

Good times with friends, good deeds for charity.

Meet the Victoria Landing Knitting Circle.

Brandon, Manitoba is home to All Seniors Care's Victoria Landing Retirement Residence as well as a fantastic group of individuals who are putting their skills to work, for the betterment of the community.

Every Wednesday morning, between 8-10 ladies meet to share a cup of tea, lots smiles and plenty  of clothing. These ladies once a week throughout the entire year in order to prepare for an annual sale which they manage.

Sweaters, scarves, toques, mitts and more! The Knitting Circle sells their beautifully hand-made clothes and donates all the proceeds to the local Brandon Community Food Bank. Any clothing items that don't sell are put into hampers for the Salvation Army.

A rare gesture to donate brand new clothes to charity! This past October, they made a $1,356 contribution to the food bank thanks to a year of hard work.

We are very proud of the community spirit present at Victoria Landing and commend the Knitting Circle on the continued generosity of their weekly pastime.

ASC goes pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

This past weekend All Seniors Care was very active in bringing attention to Breast Cancer Awareness.

Staff members embraced the opportunity and helped in promoting these efforts. Residents could see servers, cooks, and managers wear pink gloves during lunch service as a symbol of support for those who have been affected by breast cancer.

We gave plenty of autonomy to each residence and so initiatives varied across the many ASC buildings.

While some did cakes others had servers dressed in pink blouses. We found flowers, serviettes, dainties, balloons, dessert, and volunteers; all dressed in pink!

Residents also came dressed in pink - a wonderful fellowship.
Many residents are still talking about the powerful showing of support.
Quite a statement!

For more information about breast cancer, volunteer opportunities or to make a donation, please visit this link to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. http://www.cbcf.org/en-US/home.aspx

Ring the Bells! - It's an All Seniors Care Wedding.

By Danny Hooper

Doris Mahon, 89, and Clarence Thompson, 94, will wed Saturday at Rutherford Heights Retirement Residence.

He’s Counting The Sleeps.

And for good reason. Saturday night, 94-year-old Clarence Thompson will finally get to sleep with his sweetheart, 89-year-old Doris Mahon. The couple will wed in the afternoon in a small chapel at the Rutherford Heights Retirement Residence in south Edmonton, where they both now live, but in separate suites.

The twice-widowed Doris moved into the complex back in the summer of 2008, the long-retired meteorologist Clarence showed up roughly 6 months later, and was quickly smitten. Unable to eat, unable to sleep, he set his mind to marrying the lovely Doris, but how to go about it? Meteorologists, after all, tend to be a shy lot.

His early attempts at courtship went unnoticed, thanks in no small part to the competition from other men at Rutherford, all better shuffle-boarders, bridge players, and dancers.
But somewhere along the way all that changed and Doris finally noticed Clarence, who proposed earlier this summer, shortly before her birthday.

A man of many tributes, what Doris loves most is his sense of humour. On their first date she asked if he’d ever been married. After pondering the question awhile he replied, with a twinkle in his eye, “I don’t remember.”

Housing Options for Older Manitobans.

The needs and abilities of older Manitobans change gradually over time. The kinds of changes and when they occur vary from one person to the next. Although many seniors can remain active and independent in their own homes, others need a little help to continue living in the community. Placement in a personal care home is not the only option to meet the changing needs of older adults. Many seniors can safely remain in their community if they have assistance with their daily routine or basic health needs.

Help for Seniors and their Families

circleIt isn’t always easy for seniors and their families to determine what solution will work best for them. Although the family home may be full of memories, it may also feel very empty, leading to isolation, depression and even malnutrition. Some home-based services – such as Services to Seniors and Home Care – are available to eligible individuals to help with their daily activities or health needs. However, an increasing number of older adults find themselves in need of an alternative safe, comfortable housing option.
Manitoba’s Aging in Place initiative may have the answer you’re looking for. Living in a supported environment offers independence while at the same time providing social interaction, personal safety and basic amenities like community dining rooms, housekeeping help and laundry assistance. And as needs change over time, there are options that allow seniors to gradually increase the support and assistance they receive while at the same time maintain as much independence as possible.
Supports to Seniors in Group Living
The Supports to Seniors in Group Living model is one option. Enhanced supports are offered within some designated existing seniors housing at no charge to tenants, with a goal of keeping
people as independent as possible, for as long as possible.
Supports range from one-on-one help with arranging appointments or transportation, to social activities and expanded meal programs.
Supportive Housing
The Supportive Housing concept was introduced as an option for seniors who require 24-hour support and supervision. This community housing option can help seniors delay or avoid personal care home placement until an intensive level of care is required.
Supportive Housing combines community living in a secure apartment setting with personal support services. The resident pays for rent and a service package (meals, laundry and housekeeping). Personal care is funded through the regional health authority (RHA) at no cost to the tenant. Eligibility is assessed through the RHA’s Home Care Program.
Personal Care Home
A personal care home is an option when an individual needs 24-hour nursing care due to significant physical or mental deterioration. Personal care homes are designed for individuals who can no longer safely remain at home or in a supportive housing environment.

Seniors and Computers

What Can Seniors Do With Computers?
For many, computers are a tool that allows you to have a hobby. For example, you may love to cook and therefore get recipes off the Food Channel website. What about computers for seniors? What can seniors do with computers?

First of all, I’ll define seniors as anyone over the age of 50. Why? Simply because you can join AARP at age 50. But not matter your age, using a computer for the first time can be very frightening and intimidating. So, what is the benefit of going the process of learning a computer and what can a senior do online?

1. Connect. Social networking websites like Facebook allow you to connect with all the people you care about, no matter the physical difference that divides you. This is a free way (doesn’t cost money) to stay in touch and update each other about your lives. Plus you can share photographs and even movies online. There is no need to miss your grandkid’s birthday. While you may not be there physically, you can see the video of your grandkids blowing out the candles on their cake or opening the present you sent them. This is a great way to stay in touch.

2. Find Hobbies. Did you ever want to try something new? There are millions of websites dedicated to every possible subject so no matter what your interests are it’s easy to find all the information you need.

3. Blogging. You have a lifetime of experience, ideas and opinions. So why not share those with the world… or just your family. A blog can be public or private and can be a great way to express yourself. Give it a try!

4. Shopping. Have you ever wanted something that’s either hard to find or not available locally. If it was ever made chances are you can find it online. Whether it’s collecting coins or ordering a new TV, there are great discounts online and often free shipping or no sales tax. Plus you can compare items, which mystery book has the best reviews or which power drill is most reliable? Find all this and more online.
Plus most local libraries now offer free internet access and computers. So if you are nervous about learning or wonder how much you'll actually use a computer, start at the library. You can always decide to purchase later on if you really enjoy it.

These are just a few of the many reasons you should take the time to learn the computer and internet. The possibilities are endless and will help you engage in more activities. No matter what your interests or passions are in life you can find it online.

Seniors and Public Transportation

Do you use public transportation often? This article explores many common forms of transportation and offers friendly reminders and tips to be mindful of during your next outing.

Safety Tips for Seniors Using Public Transportation

Take special care when using public transportation

By , About.com Guide
Whether you’re in your home city or on vacation, public transportation can be a good way to travel. In most cities, public transportation is much easier, less stressful and more cost-effective than traveling by car or taxi.
Special Challenges for Seniors Using Public Transportation
As many seniors get older, they notice a loss of balancestrength, or dexterity, making them more vulnerable to injuries. If you are experiencing these changes, the following tips can help:
Public Transportation Safety Tips
  1. When you enter or leave a vehicle, watch for slippery or uneven pavement and other hazards that could cause you to fall or twist an ankle.
  2. Have your bus fare ready to avoid losing your balance while you look for correct change.
  3. When you enter or leave a subway car, be sure to “mind the gap” as they say in London. There is a gap between the edge of the train platform and the subway door. Watch your step.

A great article profiling our own Summerwood Village in Sherwood Park

Linking_generations

“The Year of Joy”

What a wonderful “Year of Joy” Linking Generations had this year.  It is hard to describe just how much the students are gaining from their interactions with their seniors.  I know they are bringing amazing Joy into each other’s lives simply by listening and sharing their lives.  These young people and the seniors are sharing their life experiences, sharing their dreams, and sharing their hearts.  Thanks to each Linking Generations senior for giving of your time and of your heart.  We are impressed by your wealth of knowledge and interesting life stories and touched by your kindness and compassion.

Linking Generations is very grateful for the support we receive from Summerwood Retirement Residence.  Special thanks to Dianne Lalonde and Caryn Lansing for your personal belief in the benefits of connecting these two generations ~ your wonderful support is appreciated.  You are supporting our Linking students to experience history through the eyes of their seniors.

Thanks to our Linking Angels:  Cheyenne Brown, Patricia Hollman, Heather Wilton, and Alicia Webster for sharing your time, your hearts, and your kindness to make each visit meaningful.

We are very grateful to our funding partners:  Alberta Government Community Initiatives Program, Lakeland Ridge School, and Holy Spirit Catholic School.  We also really appreciate those individuals who choose to designate their United Way donations to Linking Generations or pledge their support to the Mayor’s Walk/Run.  It is these valuable partnerships or ‘links’ that make our program such a success.

Seniors or your families, please have a look at Linking Generations website www.linkinggenerations.ca.  The photo gallery captures the true essence of our programs ~ the smiles of the seniors and their students.
Wishing you a wonderful summer!
